Most people seem to make their way through life without giving reality a second thought. They move through life with a sense of integration. But what would happen if life suddenly felt unreal? What would happen if you felt cut off from reality?

Approximately 2% of the population feel this way on any given day. Those who experience these feelings have what is known as “Depersonalisation disorder”.

Psychologists have suggested that a person’s feelings of unreality can be linked to psychological trauma. Their feelings of detachment from the world may be a defence mechanism.

So what can you do if life seems unreal? Here are some suggestions:

  • Recognise your feelings – Understand that it’s you that feels a loss of reality. Recognising these feelings can help life to seem a little more real.
  • Describe how you’re feeling “as if” – Use a phrase such as “I feel as if I’m dreaming”, “I feel as if other people are robots”, “I feel as if my head is full of cotton wool” etc. If you can use the “as if” phrase, it shows that your sense of reality is still intact.
  • Focus on other things – If you try to push your feelings of unreality away, you end up empowering them. Instead, try to focus on other things. Your feelings of depersonalisation will usually be brief, so keep your mind occupied elsewhere.
  • Use grounding techniques – Watch your favourite television programme, be aware of your breathing, or learn a new skill. These techniques can help you to reduce your sense of depersonalisation.
