Sometimes it can be hard to know who you can trust. If you feel as if someone has previously betrayed your trust, you might be wondering if others have done the same. The good news is that there are a few relatively easy ways to determine who you can trust.

  • Does the person in question get excited when you make some intellectual progress?

If they genuinely care about your intellectual well-being, it’s likely that you can trust them. However, if they are only interested in influencing the way you think, it’s unlikely that you can trust them.

  • Do they like to share their ideas?

A person that you can trust is a person who is happy to share their ideas with you. Alternatively, if they are looking for your approval or they are very eager to please, they can misrepresent their views.

  • Are they happy to clarify what they mean if you ask them to?

Someone who is willing to tell you what they mean is likely to be dependable. However, if they don’t clarify much, if anything at all, chances are they’re not very dependable.

  • Are they patient with you when times are hard?

When you’re going through a tough time, a trustworthy person is someone who is willing to help you with your dilemma. Alternatively, if they are too keen to offer a solution, they can misdiagnose you, as such and chances are they’re not willing to help.
