A lot of people love the thought of attending some social events. Events such as birthday parties, BBQs and celebrations can be something to look forward to. However, many people can find the thought of attending such events quite anxiety-provoking.

Approximately 7% of people suffer from this somewhat debilitating condition. There is some good news though, social anxiety can be managed. In some ways, it can be managed so well that it no longer has a negative impact on the sufferer’s life.

We offer mental health support for Selby and the surrounding areas. Why not give us a call? Our phone line is open from 7 pm – 10 pm, 365 days of the year.

Go Into Social Settings with a Strategy

Always have a strategy, whether you decide what you’re going to talk about or who you’re going to talk to, a strategy can make a world of difference.

When you know what you’re going to say, chances are you feel much more in control of the situation.

Tell Yourself You’re ok

No matter how much you prepare yourself, you might still feel anxious. This is perfectly ok. It might make you feel better to know that most people will be feeling anxious about going to the event.

Tell yourself that you’re ok. You’re in control and you’re fine. Repeating this little mantra to yourself can help you to feel much more relaxed.

Have an Escape Route

Did you know that you can have an escape route? If you find things a little too hard you are allowed to leave. You can stand outside for 10-20 minutes and gather your thoughts together.

It’s ok if you need to leave the event completely. If you’re very uncomfortable and it’s all become a bit too much, you can leave. Try not to beat yourself up too much. You tried to attend a social and you lasted 60 minutes, for example. You did well.

Just so you know, you can get help for your anxieties here. There’s no shame in asking for help.

Burn your Adrenaline before Hand

A really effective way of dealing with any social anxiety is to burn your adrenaline before you attend the event. Go for a walk, dance, do some exercise or anything that usually burns your adrenaline. When you do, you could feel less anxious at the party.

Become a Good Listener

A great way to deal with new people is to become a good listener. When you listen to what another person is saying, you are less likely to feel anxious. Concentrating on the person talking to you can help you to feel more relaxed. Did you know that listening to someone will encourage them to like you? People love others who listen to them.

If you live in Barlby anxiety support is available. In fact, it’s available throughout North Yorkshire. Please contact your doctor or local charities or organisations if you’re struggling.
