Self Esteem: What is it?

Self-esteem refers to your opinion of yourself. People who have good self-esteem can feel good about themselves and about life. In addition to this, they might find it easy to deal with life’s challenges.

People with low self-esteem don’t seem themselves in a positive light. Life can seem hard at times and they could struggle to deal with life’s challenges.

You can find some useful information about self-esteem, its causes, and theories here

Where to Get Help for Low Self-Esteem

You can get help from a variety of sources, these include:

  • Your GP – Your GP can help you to get the support you need. They may offer you medication and/or ask you to keep a diary of how you’re feeling.
  • A therapist or counsellor – If your doctor thinks you need extra support, they may refer you to a therapist or counsellor.
  • Your family and friends – Your family and friends
  • Your community – There may be some local support groups who can offer you help and the opportunity to talk about how you’re feeling.

You may have always had low self-esteem or you may be feeling down about yourself for the 1st time. The good news is there’s help available. You do not need to struggle with your self-esteem on your own.
