If you’re feeling anxious or your mood is low, you can find it hard to make decisions. Regardless of whether these decisions are significant or mundane, making them can be hard.
In addition to the inability to make decisions, you might start to feel distressed or uncomfortable with uncertainty. The uncertainty can make it even harder to make a decision.

A 2020 study found that people with depression or anxiety are less able to adapt to any fast-changing situations than those who aren’t suffering from these conditions. However, the authors of the study found that with the right type of intervention, those with depression or anxiety could make better in-the-moment decisions.
Participants of the study who were able to adapt quickly to changes did so thanks to their emotional resilience. Those who are emotionally resilient have a tendency to focus on past decisions that resulted in a good outcome.
It’s thought that the ability to focus on past decisions can help in real-world situations. Cognitive therapies which help people to focus on their past successes could prove to be very useful. In fact, they could ultimately help people to find decision making a little less tricky.
