You can now have therapy online. The pandemic meant that most of us had to communicate with people in new ways. Thanks to the power of technology, many people were still able to have therapy via the internet. It looks as though a lot more therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists are going to offer online therapy.

But how can you make it work for you? Is it possible to receive the same support online as opposed to sitting across the room from someone? This is what we’re going to explore.

We offer mental health support for Selby and the surrounding areas. Why not give us a call? Our phone line is open from 7 pm – 10 pm, 365 days of the year.

Call us on (01757) 642 399. If you call before our phone lines are open and we cannot answer you will be diverted to an NHS Helpline.

Find the Right Therapist

No matter how you look for online therapy, it should result in you finding the right therapist for you. Ideally, you will see someone how has the right accreditation. For example, any psychiatrist you talk to should be registered with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. When you know they have the right skills, you know that you’re more likely to receive the care and support you need.

Accept That it can be Hard

Therapy can be quite hard, it can be uncomfortable, and it might not be something that you look forward to. The good thing about having therapy online is that you can have it in the comfort of your own home. This can potentially make a difficult session easier. Have one of your favourite non-alcoholic drinks with you, or a fidget toy nearby if you start feeling anxious.

Enjoy the Flexibility

When you have online therapy you don’t need to worry about commuting to your appointment. This can make life easier if you’re a busy person or you usually have to travel far to receive therapy in Barlby, for example.

Choose to be on Camera

When you choose to be on camera during your therapy session you and your therapist can use hand gestures and facial expressions to communicate. This is something you can’t do if you speak over the phone or you talk without turning the camera on. It also allows you to feel as though you’re having therapy whereas speaking to someone without seeing their face might not feel quite real.

Understand the Benefits of Online Therapy

Studies have shown that having online anxiety or depression therapy can be just as effective as having therapy in person. Online therapy is also likely to help people who are struggling with their mental health in other ways. When you know that online therapy can help you, there’s a real chance that you’ll get more out of it.
