If you want to change something about yourself, it can seem impossible. However, there is a technique you can use that can help you to work out why you want to change while offering you the motivation to.

If you really want to change, you need to be ready and willing to change. Motivational interviewing is an exercise that can help you to prepare yourself, even if you are doing it on your own.

Begin by using focusing on what aspects of your life you would like to change. Think about what your life is like now and, again, what you would like to change. 

Next, reflect on how those changes will help to build your self-confidence. Also, reflect on how the changes could help you to live your life according to your values. Identify your strengths and think about any successful changes you have made in the past. 

When you are ready and feel able to begin the next step, start by making a plan. Identify your goals and map them out in small, realistic steps. Be sure to establish SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. 

Once you have begun your change, think about how it’s progressing, and what it is you need to do next to achieve your desired changes.
