Many people consider moving home, getting divorced, and dealing with death to be the most stressful things in life. However, studies have shown that moving to another country is incredibly challenging.

The psychological impact of moving to another country and a different culture can be significant. One of the hardest things associated with migrating is living in one country while calling another your home. As happy as you may be here, there are some drawbacks to living apart from your friends and family.

It’s thought that those who emigrate to another country can be five times as likely to suffer from stress and mental health conditions as someone going through a divorce.

The stress of dealing with a new culture and noticing the differences can be significant. The good news is there are ways to deal with this stress:

  1. Take care of your physical well-being – Exercise can help to relieve stress.
  2. Take care of your mental health – There are mental health services in your local area. Don’t be ashamed to speak to someone if you’re struggling.
  3. Try to focus on your immediate surroundings – Think about the benefits of being where you are and how you can make it even better for yourself.
  4. Build a community – Forming friendships and building relationships can help to relieve tension. It can also make you feel more connected to your new town or city.
  5. Don’t be afraid to admit you miss home – It’s ok to miss your home, it’s completely natural. Stay in touch with those you love. They will want to hear all about your new life.

Children and Migration

If you have brought some children with you, it’s important that you listen to how they’re feeling. Be sensitive to their needs, just as you are sensitive to your own. Children can find the process of migrating quite a challenge. However, they are likely to adapt to their new life quite quickly.
