It’s thought that more than 1 million people in England are waiting for mental health treatment. A recent survey by The Royal College of Psychiatrists discovered that there is 1 psychiatrist for approximately every 12,570 people in the country.

Another worrying statistic comes from NHS England who has estimated that there is an estimated 1.5 million people waiting to receive mental health support. There is also a major concern that the situation will become worse as the pandemic’s effects become all too clear. Unfortunately, there is no indication that things will get better any time soon. Vacancy rates for psychiatrists are around 10% nationwide.

There is a real concern that the all too real high demand for psychiatric care will not get any better unless the Government steps in.

A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care said that the latest expansion in mental health services has been the fastest in the history of the NHS. With an additional £2.3 billion a year given to the NHS by 2023-24, there’s a chance that hundreds of thousands of adults and children can access the services they need.
