A recent article in a national newspaper explained that many mental health patients are being made to share wards with other distressed patients. This is despite the NHS being told to give patients their own rooms.

Mental health experts and the NHS watchdog have raised their concerns about the lack of privacy, disturbed sleep, and potential exposure to danger.

Shared accommodation should be eradicated by 2024, according to ministers. However, this puts even more pressure on every NHS trust. It also means that patients who need better treatment might have to wait even longer for it.

The Department of Health and Social Care believes single rooms can help to improve care. It even has the chance to reduce how long patients are kept in residential treatment.

Dormitories are outdated and they are not ideal environments for those who need mental health treatment. With any luck, fewer patients will be housed in what can only be an uncomfortable environment for many.
