60% of adults and just less than 70% of young people are affected by their mental health. This was highlighted during lockdown. Some people even experienced mental health issues for the first time. This is why it is crucial that we make sure everyone is aware that help is available.

Mental Health Awareness Week occurs annually and aims to help people focus on good mental health. Every year, Mental Health Awareness Week has a theme, this year’s theme is nature. Nature is absolutely central to our emotional and psychological health. We are made to be a part of nature, and this can be seen in studies that show how spending time in green places can reduce blood pressure, lower stress levels, and reduce anxiety.

Many people are still spending time away from nature. In fact, almost 15% of households in the UK have no access to a garden or nature. This is something that needs to change as nature can be hugely beneficial to everyone’s mental health. This week, we will be aiming to inspire you to connect with nature, encouraging you to get out and about, spending time somewhere green. You don’t need to spend hours in nature, just 10 minutes a day can help to boost your mental health.

Spend time in green spaces in Selby, or wherever you happen to be. Reap the benefits of what nature has to offer and feel better for it.
