Everyone goes through difficult times, and most people get support from others. This support can make the world of difference to anyone who is finding life hard. If you’re worried about a friend’s mental health, there are a number of ways that you can show support.

How to Tell if a Friend Needs Support

It might not always be obvious if someone needs mental health support. If you think your friend is struggling, the best thing you can do is to be sensitive to how they are feeling. This can make a difference to their day and their overall mental health. If, for example, your friend is feeling down, you could ask them why they think they feel down. Actively listen to what they tell you and try not to judge them too much.

How to Offer Help

Ask your friend about how they are feeling. Let them take charge of the conversation. Try not to talk about yourself too much. Be kind as talking about feelings isn’t always easy.

Repeat what your friend has said. If, for example, they say they’ve been feeling down since the start of the year, say “Why do you think you’ve been feeling down since the start of the year?”

Repeating a little bit of what your friend has said can make them feel heard. This in itself can help with mental health and make your friend feel supported.

If you think your friend is in danger or they are seriously ill, please call NHS 111 or a GP as soon as you can.

Try not to control your friend, they need to make their own decisions. If you want to help a little more, you could offer to go to their next doctor’s appointment with them.
