If you have been treated badly by someone, what is the best way to overcome this and move on? A 2021 study showed that those who intentionally try to forget something unpleasant felt more psychologically distant from the event. The study which involved almost 400 people also showed that emotional forgiveness was associated with forgetting some of the upsetting event’s details.

What this means is that emotionally forgiving someone (rather than making a simple decision to forgive them) felt separated from the event. They also recalled the event in a more abstract way. In other words, they did not remember quite as many minute details. They remembered some of the details but many of those details represented the event.

Being able to recall the event in a more abstract way resulted in even more emotional forgiveness.

The research that took place at De Monfort University in Leicester supports earlier research that suggests that forgiveness should be emotional.

This is opposed to deciding to forgive and forget in a matter-of-fact way, without involving emotion.

Not all victims of unpleasant experiences can forgive and forget. Sometimes people are too traumatised to be able to do this and it’s ok. Forgiveness is not an essential part of recovery.
