We’re all told that having a balanced diet is important, but we’re not always told which foods can boost your mental health. Food can have a huge impact on mental health, which is why it’s important you know what we should all be eating more of.

The Mediterranean Diet

Numerous studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet is good for heart health. This diet has also found to be good for your mental health.

Those who follow this diet tend to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and seafood. Full of vitamins, minerals as well as healthy fats and carbs, this diet can help you to stay mentally well.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help to reduce anxiety and depression. You can find omega-3 in nuts, seeds, and oily fish. It’s also thought that turmeric can help to fight depression. This is because it could reduce inflammation in the brain.

Seafood

Seafood is high in omega-3 fatty acids, and we’ve already seen that they can help to reduce anxiety and depression. It’s recommended that you eat fish two to three times a week. Why not enjoy some salmon, trout, oysters, mackerel, mussels, herring, anchovies, or sardines? You can enjoy seafood in salads, and a range of other dishes.

Nuts and Seeds

In addition to tasting good, nuts and seeds are full of beneficial nutrients and omega-3s. Consuming nuts and seeds regularly could help you to feel better. The best nuts and seeds to eat are chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts. However, most nuts and seeds come with nutritional benefits.

Fruits

All fruits are full to the brim with antioxidants and a range of nutrients that can help to boost your mood. Strawberries, blueberries, apples, and grapes seem to be the most beneficial for your mental health. Try to consume at least a few different types of fruit each day. Tuck into a delicious fruit salad now and again so you can benefit from the naturally-occurring nutrients.

Vegetables

The more colourful your plate is, the more nutrients it is likely to contain. To get the maximum benefit from vegetables, consider eating peppers, and butternut squash. Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and broccoli are some of the best vegetables to consume regularly.
