Have you ever wondered how the food that you eat affects your brain? Most of us have heard that fish is good for our brain, but there are also other foods that can nourish it.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are useful for your brain as they work to produce serotonin. Serotonin is one of the brain’s “Happy” chemicals and it helps to balance your mood and reduce anxiety. Your brain prefers to have carbohydrates that are found in fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, potatoes, and lactose which is the naturally-occurring sugar that’s found in milk. Without enough of these carbs which are turned into glucose, your brain is unable to function properly.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamins B, C, D, and E along with magnesium are all vital as they help to keep your brain healthy. If you have a diet that is full of vitamins and minerals that you get from fruit and vegetables you’re less likely to have dementia when you’re older. Vitamin E and thiamine can help to transmit messages to your brain from your nerves. Vitamin C along with vitamins B6 and B12 helps your nerves to work properly. Magnesium is great at helping your memory, and vitamins C, D, and E can help to maintain normal brain function.

Fats

Omega-3 oils/fats that can be found in oily fish and olive oil can help to reduce the development of dementia. If you’re pregnant, omega-3 oils can help the baby’s brain to develop now and during your child’s early years.
