Many of us have a real fear of missing out (FOMO). We can thank technology, more specifically social media for this. However, you could change your fear of missing out to the joy of missing out (JOMO).

We offer mental health support for Selby and the surrounding areas. Why not give us a call? Our phone line is open from 7 pm – 10 pm on weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Call us on (01757) 642 399. If you call before our phone lines are open and we cannot answer, you will be diverted to an NHS Helpline.

FOMO and its Dangers

The fear of missing out is almost the same as keeping up with the Jones’. When you are afraid of missing out, you’re busy keeping an eye on what everyone else is doing. You become afraid of not being glued to your screen because you could miss something important.

In addition to this, when we see other people’s success, we can feel as if we’re missing out on achieving much in our own lives.

Why Missing Out can be Good

Before social media became a huge part of our lives we wouldn’t always know when our mutual friends got together. However, FOMO can be quite useful in small doses. This is especially the case if it motivates you to do something that is satisfying for you.

Turning FOMO into JOMO

The joy of missing out can be very powerful. There’s a real opportunity for you to understand what you’re missing out on and being ok with it. Don’t go to that party you feel obliged to attend. Instead, do something you enjoy. Stop making comparing yourself with others and instead enjoy having time to yourself. See what it feels like to stay at home rather than going out. Do what you want to do and take the pressure off yourself to conform, as it can be very freeing.
