A study that began in the 1990s found that young adults who are financially stressed are likely to suffer from physical pain many years later. Data was taken from a study that involved more than 500 married couples. One of the study’s measures involved financial stress and the sense of control the couples felt they had over their finances.

Pain was also assessed and it was found that those who felt they had very little control over their finances suffered from physical pain 30 after the test began. In addition to this, it was found that those who had a higher income were in less physical pain than those whose income was low.

While there is no clear evidence as yet as to what is causing the pain, there are a few ideas. Some scientists have hypothesised that the lack of control someone feels could result in some poor life choices. These choices could, ultimately, lead to them experiencing physical pain. However, more research is needed.

Higher-income families who previously felt little control over their finances might have made healthier lifestyle choices than those with less money. In addition to this, they may have had to work in less physical jobs, which could have resulted in them experiencing pain. While all of this is merely conjecture, the evidence is enough to suggest there is a link between financial stress and physical pain.
