If you have spent a lot of time participating in video conferences over the last 18 months, chances are you may have become used to seeing yourself on screen. However, some people find this phenomenon quite hard to deal with. In fact, there has been an increase in cosmetic surgery due to video conferencing.

Cosmetic clinics have seen an increase in the desire for procedures that involve smoothing out wrinkles. Nose jobs have also been a much-requested procedure. However, not everyone seems to be aware that they are looking at a distorted image of themselves. The closer you are to the camera, the more distorted the image is. Lockdown seems to have created a perfect storm, leaving more people feeling conscious.

The important thing to realise is that the image you see of yourself on the screen is not a true “reflection” of you. If you tend to take part in video calls via your mobile phone, there’s a real chance you will have the camera pointed up at you. Again, the image that you see of yourself is not accurate. While video conferencing has been and is still a great way to stay in touch with others, there’s a risk that it’s led to more people suffering from dysmorphia
