Speaking to your doctor about your mental health concerns can be quite anxiety-provoking. You’re probably used to talking about your physical health, but your mental health might seem harder speak about.

Don’t worry, your doctor will be used to talking to their patients about mental health issues. Knowing that this is the case could make you feel a little less anxious.

We offer mental health support for Selby and the surrounding areas. Why not give us a call? Our phone line is open from 7 pm – 10 pm, 365 days of the year.

Call us on (01757) 642 399. If you call before our phone lines are open and we cannot answer you will be diverted to an NHS Helpline.

Before Your Doctor’s Appointment

Have you considered the following:

  • Booking a double appointment if you need more than 10 minutes
  • Making a note of what you would like to say to  your doctor
  • Asking someone to attend the appointment with you so you have some support

Not feeling ready to speak openly to your doctor about your mental health? Consider talking to someone who offers mental health support in Barlby or wherever you live.

During Your Doctor’s Appointment

During your appointment, your doctor could ask you about:

  • Your medical history
  • How your mental health affects your daily life
  • Your emotional and physical symptoms
  • Your medical history
  • What makes your symptoms worse and better
  • Whether you have a history of drug or alcohol  abuse
  • If you have an active plan to self-harm
  • If you have received help from mental health services
  • Your family’s mental health

You might be asked to make some notes about how you are feeling. This will allow you and your doctor to track your symptoms. This will help your doctor to offer you a more personalised treatment plan.

Your doctor can help you to work towards feeling better. This is why it’s important that you ask them for help.
