Good thinking is quite important in our everyday lives. However, learning to think like a detective can help to boost your creativity and incisiveness.

It can be hard to think like a detective because our brain can tell us that what we see is actually all that there is. Step back and try to establish what it is that you know. Don’t form any conclusions just yet. Think about what you don’t know and how you can find out what you don’t know.

Identify all of the possible explanations and make a note of them. Now it’s time to think again as chances are you’ve missed something.

Use a mind map to help you keep track of any incoming information. Does it support or contradict the possible explanations? Try to find patterns but make sure you don’t jump to any conclusions.

Make sure that your investigation has sufficient lines of inquiry and incoming evidence.

Ask another person to look at your case from a more critical perspective. Ask them to raise objections before or even during their time looking at the case.

Make sure you stay curious, you’re a good listener, and you’re patient.

Keep digging, try to remain humbler, embrace any doubt that you have, and continue to educate yourself.
