According to a report in a national newspaper, the English Government reportedly broke their mental health crisis pledge. This is after statistics showed that 100s of mental health patients were sent to hospitals far away from their homes. It’s thought that this was due to a lack of available beds.

The Government had pledged to end what they called “inappropriate” placements. The statistics that were put together by the Department of Health and Social Care could be interpreted as showing that vulnerable people are unable to see those they love.

Between April 2020 and April 2021, 175 people were sent to hospitals up to 200km from their homes. 135 people were sent up to 300km away, and 45 were sent at least 300km away.

Mental health services have been under a lot of pressure lately as the pandemic resulted in more people suffering. This is reportedly why there have been fewer available beds.

The Department of Health and Social Care has published an action plan which could help mental health services cope. In addition to this, NHS England has reportedly been given £500m to deal with the crisis that the pandemic created.
