A study that took place in Bristol, UK showed that there is a clear link between air pollution and poor mental health. The mental health records of more than 13,000 people were collected and linked with models of air pollution. The study showed that those who lived in areas where there were high levels of air pollution were more likely to use mental health services.

The Bristol study which looked at people who accessed mental health services between 2008 and 2012 showed some surprising results. Those who were exposed to high levels of air pollution were 11-18% more likely to have inpatient stays. The findings of the study in which patient details were made anonymous showed that mental health issues become worse when air pollution levels are high.

If the World Health Organization‘s recommended annual limit of exposure was adhered to, mental health services will see a reduction in usage by approximately 2%

It’s clear from this study alone that lowered air pollution levels are crucial. Not only can they help to reduce an individual’s suffering, but they can also reduce the costs and pressure on healthcare services.
